In the early nineteenth century, a Tottenham chemist and Quaker named Luke Howard gave the world the language to describe what we see above us. His Latin names for clouds; cumulus, stratus, cirrus and their compounds; remain the foundation of modern meteorology more than two centuries later.
From City Birth to Tottenham Life
Luke Howard was born on 28 November 1772 in Red Cross Street, in the City of London. His father, Robert Howard, was a tin-plate manufacturer and the main supplier of Argand lamps. Howard attended a Quaker grammar school in Burford, Oxfordshire, before serving an apprenticeship with a pharmacist in Stockport, Cheshire. He later worked at a druggist's in Bishopsgate and established his own pharmacy in Fleet Street.
In 1796, Howard married Mariabella Eliot, the only daughter of John and Mary Eliot. The couple had eight children, though two died in childhood. The family initially lived in Plaistow, East London, where Howard formed a manufacturing partnership with fellow Quaker William Allen in 1798. Their factory, Allen and Howard, was built on the marshes at Plaistow, and Howard's daily commute between home and workplace provided ample opportunity for cloud observation. As he later noted, his position "passing between the works and my dwelling" enabled him to watch the changing sky.
The 1802 Essay That Changed Meteorology
In the session of 1802–3, Howard presented an essay titled "On the Modification of Clouds" to the Askesian Society, a scientific debating club in London. The essay was published in the Philosophical Magazine in July 1803. In it, Howard proposed a system for classifying clouds using Latin names, applying the principles of Linnaean taxonomy to atmospheric phenomena.
Howard identified three principal cloud types. Cumulus, meaning heap or pile, described the fluffy, cotton-wool clouds of fair weather. Stratus, meaning layer or sheet, referred to the grey, uniform cloud that often blankets the sky. Cirrus, meaning curl of hair, denoted the wispy, high-altitude clouds made of ice crystals.
He also identified intermediate or compound modifications: cirrostratus, a thin veil of cloud that often produces halos around the sun or moon; cirrocumulus, small, white, rounded masses arranged in ripples; and cumulostratus, the forerunner of what is now known as nimbus or rain clouds.
Howard wrote that "clouds are subject to certain distinct modifications, produced by the general causes which affect all the variations of the atmosphere; they are commonly as good visible indicators of the operation of these causes, as is the countenance of the state of a person's mind or body." His insight was that clouds were not merely decorative but visible indicators of atmospheric processes.
The same year, the French naturalist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck proposed a competing cloud classification system using French terms. Howard's Latin-based system prevailed, partly because Latin was the international language of science, and partly because Howard's Quaker faith made him averse to the heathen mythological names that some suggested. As one meteorologist later noted, to Howard "any name connected with heathen mythology was specially distasteful."
Tottenham: Howard's True Home
In 1813, Howard moved with his six remaining children from Plaistow to Tottenham Green. He would live in Tottenham for the rest of his life, making it his true home even while maintaining a summer residence called The Villa at Ackworth in Yorkshire from 1824 to 1852.
Howard lived at 4 Bruce Grove from 1837, after returning from Ackworth. His mother, Elizabeth, lived at the same house until her death in 1869. In 1852, following the death of his wife Mariabella on 23 February that year, Howard moved to 7 Bruce Grove, where he lived with his son Robert until his own death on 21 March 1864, aged 91.
An English Heritage blue plaque at 7 Bruce Grove commemorates him with the simple inscription: "Luke Howard 1772–1864 Namer of Clouds lived and died here." The plaque was unveiled in 2002. The building is Grade II listed, though it suffered an internal collapse and has undergone refurbishment.
Howard is buried at the Winchmore Hill Quaker Burial Ground in Enfield, north London.
Quaker Faith and the Brook Street Chapel
Howard's Quaker faith deeply influenced his scientific work. His rejection of mythological names in favour of Latin terms was one manifestation of this. His meticulous, humble approach to observation reflected Quaker values of quietism and direct engagement with nature.
However, Howard's relationship with the Society of Friends was not without difficulty. He first resigned from the Quakers in 1825 following a dispute concerning apocryphal texts. He resigned again in 1836 during the "Beaconite" controversy, a schism involving followers of Isaac Crewdson's book A Beacon to the Society of Friends. In 1837, Crewdson baptised Howard into the Plymouth Brethren.
Despite these ruptures, Howard remained committed to religious community in Tottenham. In 1839, his sons Robert and John Eliot Howard founded Brook Street Chapel, originally called Brook Street Meeting House, with financial support from Luke Howard. The chapel, located at the junction of Brook Street and the High Road in Tottenham N17, remains an Open Brethren church today. Its burial ground is now a children's playground.
The chapel has notable historical connections beyond the Howard family. It was associated with James Hudson Taylor, founder of the China Inland Mission; Thomas Barnardo, the children's charity pioneer; and Philip Gosse, the naturalist. The 1849 Tottenham Memorandum, an important document in Brethren history, was signed there.
Influence on Art, Literature and Science
Howard's cloud classification had an extraordinary impact on the arts and sciences. The German polymath Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was so impressed that he wrote a poem titled "In honour of Mr Howard" in 1821, with verses dedicated to each cloud type. Goethe even attempted to commission the German Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich to create cloud studies based on Howard's classification.
The English painter John Constable made extensive sky studies influenced by Howard's work. J.M.W. Turner's paintings of clouds and atmospheric effects also drew upon the new scientific understanding. The poet Percy Bysshe Shelley's famous poem "The Cloud" reflects Howard's classification, and the art critic John Ruskin discussed clouds extensively in his Modern Painters series.
Howard's scientific contributions extended beyond cloud naming. In 1818–20, he published The Climate of London, a two-volume work that was the earliest scientific book on urban climatology. In it, Howard identified what is now called the urban heat island effect, noting that London temperatures were 3.7°F (2.1°C) warmer at night than the surrounding countryside. He also attributed the thick "city fog" of London, what we now call smog, to this phenomenon.
In 1837, Howard published Seven Lectures in Meteorology, the first textbook in the field. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1821.
Legacy in Tottenham and Beyond
Howard's cloud classification system was adopted and developed by later meteorologists, notably Ralph Abercromby and Hugo Hildebrand Hildebrandsson. The first International Cloud Atlas was published in 1896, and the World Meteorological Organization continues to use Howard's three basic cloud types and their modifications today. The 2017 edition of the atlas added twelve new cloud formations to the system Howard began.
Tottenham has embraced its connection to the "Namer of Clouds." In 2018, Tottenham Hotspur FC named viewing areas at their new stadium "Stratus East" and "Stratus West" in his honour. The local organisation Tottenham Clouds promotes his legacy and installed the Luke Howard Weather Station and a Cloud Interpretation Board at Lordship Recreation Ground. The park is recognised as the first "Official Cloud Appreciation Park."
Howard was honoured with a Royal Mail stamp in 2024. An award in urban climate studies, the Luke Howard Award, bears his name.
Luke Howard died at 7 Bruce Grove in 1864. According to some accounts, he had by then lost all memory of his beloved clouds, yet he still looked up at the sky. His legacy, once fading from public memory, has been revived by the Cloud Appreciation Society and local Tottenham activists. Every time we look up and identify a cumulus drifting by or a cirrus streaking the high atmosphere, we speak the language of a Tottenham Quaker who changed how humanity sees the heavens.
